New Commission Created to Accredit Pharmacy Technician Programs

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) have announced their joint effort to accredit pharmacy technician programs, beginning in 2014.

The new commission, called the Pharmacy Technician Accreditation Commission (PTAC), “will be tasked with assuring and advancing the quality of pharmacy technician education and training programs” (press release 8/20/13 ASHP.org).  The new commission will expand the role of the ASHP, which has been the national accrediting body for pharmacy technicians for the past 31 years.

Completing an accredited pharmacy technician training programs is required by many state Boards of Pharmacy.
